180 Degree Rule

The 180 degree rule is where the camera stays the same side of an imaginary line, which means the camera must always be on one side of the line. For example if you have two people talking to each other you would film them on the same side because if you film one person from the front and the other from the back it will look like they are talking to each other which will then confuse the audience.

30 Degree rule

The 30 degree rule is a basic editing technique which is used in films, the camera should move at least 30 degrees between shots of the same subject.

Cross Cutting

Cross cutting is used after you create a series of scenes or sequences, which you then re-order them to create a scene that goes forwards and backwards in time.

Match Cutting

Match cutting is a method that is used by directors in editing to create a relationship between two different objects to create a visual metaphor. Which is a cut within a scene that makes it more sense.

Shot Reverse Shot

Shot reverse shot is filming technique where one camera is looking at one character speaking and then the camera changes to the other character looking back at the first character. This will allow the viewer to assume that they are looking and talking to each other.

Rule of Third

Rule of third is applied by aligning a subject with the guide lines and their intersection points. This allows linear features in the image to flow from section to section.

(Our short film)

Our Short Film

This short clip above is a piece of work that we filmed our selves at are school, to film this we used a tripod and a camera. This clip is some random small clips bunched together to help us gain confidence in filming and editing, which then can be used to help us create our final short film.

Strengths and Weaknesses

Some strengths of this clip was that we showed some simple editing techniques like speeding some parts up and also turning some parts of the clip in to black and white, which allowed us to test out different ways we could edit clips to make them look different from the original one. Some weaknesses of this clip is that in some of the parts we didn't use the tripod which meant that some parts were a little bit shaky.
What other people thought of it

Other people liked the clip produced because it helped them see different types of editing techniques that could be used in later work to make it look better. Other people liked the way we used different clips and made them in to one which allowed them to understand that you don't need to film it all in one go.
Software

The software we used to edit this clip was called adobe premier elements 10. This software allowed us to put together our clips so we could create on big one, this was good because it meant that we could edit each clip at any time instead of doing them separately which saved time. The software also allowed us to change the different whys the clip looked by being able to change the colour and the effects, which also allowed us to put in some special effects that looks good. Another thing that the software allowed us to do was to either speed up the sections of the clip or to even slow down parts which mean't we could make things faster if they are to slow of long. One last thing the software allowed us to do was to cut clips which meant if the clip went on for to long you can basically crop down the clip to make it shorter.

(Rush Analysis)

Opening Scene to Rush

In the opening scene to Rush you are made to first look up at the sky which is dark and cloudy which suggests that something bad is going to happen in the race due to the dark rainy background and atmosphere which would make the conditions for the racers harder, suggesting that a crash is going to happen. While this is happening you have one of the main characters narrating over the first scene which suggests that he is talking about the past and is remembering what happened on that certain day. In this scene you also see both the main characters, one of the characters is sitting in his car waiting for the race to start while the other character is standing around with a group of girls taking pictures which suggests that he likes the attention compared to the other guy who just wants to win races. Later you see that the two main characters have rivalry which has gone on for years, one of the characters copies the tires of the other to show that if he wins their wont be any excuses for losing. After that they all get ready to set off, while getting ready you see that they become very concentrated on winning and then the race stars.

Camera Shots and Angles

This camera shot is a low angle long shot of the race track with people setting up there race cars. This camera shot is effective because it shows the viewers the setting and whats happening in the scene which is the racers getting ready to start. The camera shot also shows you the sky which clearly shows you that a storm is about to start because the sky is turning black.

This camera shot is a close up of one of the main characters in the film. This camera shot is effective because it shows the viewers how concentrated the character is by looking at his eyes which are staring straight ahead. This suggests that this character really wants to beat the other character so he wins the race.

This camera shot is a two shot of both of the main characters in the film. This camera shot is effective because it makes the viewer feel that both of the main characters are battling each other to win the race, as well it shows you how close they are to each other which suggests something could go wrong and could lead in someone getting seriously hurt.

In the opening scene to Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy, it is set in San Diego where you see a large bridge in the opening clip with a helicopter flying towards it with a news channel on it which suggests that the cast of the news channel arrive to there jobs in style. After the helicopter goes over the bridge you see it land in a small street and the main person of the news channel steps out, then through out the rest of the opening scene you see him get ready and tell the viewers what the news is.
Camera Shots and Angles

This camera shot is an establishing shot because it is the first image you get to see, which sets the layout of the opening scene. This camera shot is effective because it gives the viewers the location of where most of the film is going to be set in which can allow people to image the area and what its like.

This camera shot is a close up of the main characters hand which has a ring on it which suggests that the character wants the viewers to focus on the ring. This is effective as it shows that this ring is important to him which suggests why this camera shot is a close up of the ring. This image also suggests that the ring is special to this character because he has it on while presenting the news and also suggests that he has earned this because he has done a really good job.

This camera shot is a medium shot of all of the main characters in the film which suggests that these characters are going to have the most screen time in the film, also this camera shot suggests that they want the viewers to focus on these four characters. This is effective because it shows the audience the main characters which are in the film and who you follow through out it.

(Kingdom of the Crystal Skull Analysis)

Opening scene to Indiana Jones: Kingdom of the Crystal Skull

In the opening of the Indiana Jones: Kingdom of the Crystal Skull you get to see a car race through a desert/large dry area of land. The car has four young adults in it which are speeding across an open space, when they reach a road you see some army vehicles heading towards there objective which suggests that car shouldn't be in this location. Then you see the car speed up to get to the front of the queue which suggests that they want to race the people in the front, when they reach the front they see two soldiers in the front car and the four young adults beg them to race which they agree to. While racing they both speed away from the other vehicles until the army car has to go in a different direction.

Camera Shots and Angles

This camera shot is a medium shot of a couple of army cars and a small vehicle, this is effective as it shows the difference of size between the army vehicles and the standard car which makes the army look powerful due to there cars being over double the size. This is also effective because it shows the viewer that the army is transporting something or doing a mission which is top secrete which is why they are in the middle of no where and why there is only one person on the road with them.

This camera shot is a close up of two soldiers in a vehicle heading to a camp, this is effective as it shows the facial expression of one of the soldiers which in this image he looks angry/disappointed with the other soldier because he isn't being professional which suggests that the other soldier is younger soldier which still wants to have fun while doing his job. This is also effective because it gives you an idea that this film is going to include the army in it which suggests that there is going to be lots of gun fights/action through out the film.

This camera shot is a establishing shot because it shows the setting of the opening scene and some of the location, this is effective as it shows large amounts of the area which is in the opening scene which then allows the viewer to picture the condition. This is also effective as it shows you how empty the area is which suggests that it is top secret and shouldn't be seen or entered by random people because it holds secrete information which shouldn't be leaked to the outside world.

This suggests that see is trying to be sneaky and careful which is probably why see is sitting alone in the dark, The darkness also suggests that she is doing something bad/something that she shouldn't be doing and that's why she is alone in the dark. Being dark creates a sinister/eerie which then can make the viewer uncomfortable or frightened because they don't know whats going to happen.

This camera shot is a high angle medium shot of a police officer, this is effective as it gives the viewer a glimpse the officer and what facial expressions are being used. For example in this image the officer looks unhappy because he's done something wrong and is getting blamed for it which suggests that he should of done this job better and he wouldn't be in this position, the high angle suggests that he is talking to someone that is a higher rank than him and that he has more power over him which suggests that he is taking control.

This camera shot is low angle medium shot a man in a suit standing facing the camera which is effective as it makes the viewer feel that the man is looking at them which makes you feel apart of the film. The low angle is effective because it suggests that the man has more power over you and that he is a higher rank, which suggests why he is dressed up in a smart suit. The medium shot from down the corridor is effective because it shows how far away he is from the camera which means he needs to travel further to reach his target.

In this opening scene you see a person captured and being tortured in a large open room. You then see three heavily armored vehicles traveling across a dessert to a small factory village, when they reach the small village you see one of them turn there vehicle around and shot the enemy's with an mounted turret which are blocking there way to there objective. After killing most of the enemy one of the vehicles reverse towards the objective because on the back of the vehicle it has a large ram on the back which allows it to destroy any large objects in the way, when breached the vehicle turns back around and continues on wards shooting down enemies. You then see one person in one of the vehicles with a rocket launcher shooting down bulks of enemies in key locations, when one team reaches the end they see a helicopter flying towards them and one of them decides to turn on a motor bike and push it towards the helicopter leading it to crash into it and destroy it. In the final 40 seconds of this clip you see the team split up and make there way into the building killing anyone that is stopping them from reaching the person that is captured.

Camera Shots and Angles

This camera shot is a low angle medium shot of the main vehicle in front, this camera shot is effective as it shows use the vehicle which is being used and how heavily armored it is which suggests that this mission is very important to them and that they want to get it over and done with without any causalities. This camera shot is also effective as it is at an low angle which tell us that it is powerful and important to the scene, as well it has the writing on the front which is 'COMING SOON' which is a cheesy line which are mostly in all action films.

This camera shot is a close up of the front of the vehicle, this is effective as it has a metal ramming block on the front of the vehicle which suggests that it can do a lot of damage if this hits anything, which then suggests that it is going to be used to break down heavy walls or barricades.
